2 NIGHT – 4WD COOKTOWN ‘ESSENCE OF OZ’ TOUR
Friday 7 September to Sunday 9 September 2007
The Cooktown “Essence Of Oz” is a 3 day 4WD accommodated safari which will show you ancient rainforests and outback landscapes, ancient Aboriginal rock art, Cook’s adventures, a rollicking Gold Rush, amazing feats of exploration and pioneering hardships.

DAY ONE: West over the Great Dividing Range into an outback landscape of termite mounds and cattle stations. At Split Rock we’ll climb the sandstone escarpment (reasonable fitness required) to view ancient Aboriginal rock art depicting life and customs here thousands of years ago. Onward past Annan River Gorge to historic Cooktown to stay overnight. (D)

DAY TWO:Walk where Captain Cook once walked, touch the sand where “Endeavour” was beached, visit Grassy Hill, from where the famous navigator plotted his escape route, and visit the James Cook Historical Museum. We’ll also visit eerie Black Mountain and the Lion’s Den Hotel before the rugged 4WD Bloomfield Track takes us to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree rainforest. We’ll walk in the World Heritage listed rainforest to see the wondrous plants of this primeval jungle, the oldest rainforest on Earth. After visiting Cape Tribulation your guide will check you in to your rainforest resort and leave you in their care.The remainder of the afternoon and evening is yours to relax or enjoy resort and local activities independently. DAY THREE: A peaceful morning before joining our specialist rainforest tour to travel to our private “Stairway to Paradise” walk and “The Riverhouse” rainforest hideaway for lunch. Later, board your riverboat to cruise on a secluded mangrove lined jungle creek, an excellent chance to see crocodiles … in the wild! You now move on to Mossman Gorge and another opportunity to walk in the rainforest. A leisurely drive to Port Douglas or Cairns ends your safari of adventure, discovery… and fun! (B, L)

DAY TWO: LAMINGTON NATIONAL PARK (B)
Start the day with O’Reilly’s famous Bird Walk and meet the array of birdlife that visit each morning to feed around the Guesthouse. After breakfast participate in a choice of morning and afternoon activities from our guided “Discovery Program”. Choose from interpretive rainforest walks or guided 4WD bus excursions to scenic waterfalls and lookouts and the rainforest. In the evening join a nocturnal walk, watch an audiovisual presentation or just relax in the lounge and learn about the history of the O’Reilly family.

DAY THREE: LAMINGTON NATIONAL PARK TO FRASER ISLAND (B)
Enjoy an early morning breakfast before checking out and departing for Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island. Your personal transfer departs at 8.00am for Roma Street Station in Brisbane to connect with the Tilt Train, departing at 10.30am.The train arrives in Maryborough at 1.55pm.You will be transferred by coach to Urangan Harbour for your 4.00pm catamaran transfer to Kingfisher Bay Resort. After a 45minute cruise across the Great Sandy Strait, you will be welcomed at Australia’s leading ecotourism resort. Explore the resort, swim in the pools, go bushwalking or try your luck fishing. In the evening indulge in fantastic Australian food and wine, relax in the Maheno Lounge or kick up your heels at the Wilderness Bar.

DAY FOUR: FRASER ISLAND (B,L)
Before breakfast join a ranger to seek out some of the birds of Fraser. At 8.45am depart on the “Beauty Spots” full day ranger guided 4WD coach tour. Discover amazing pockets of rainforest growing in sand,crystal clear freshwater lakes, shipwrecks and coloured sands. You’ll drive along one of the world’s most spectacular highways – 75 mile beach and learn the fascinating history of Fraser Island. Lunch and refreshments are included. On return to the resort stroll along the beach, watch the sun set over the sea and sip champagne while marvelling at the stars of the southern sky.

Cruise through Katherine Gorge and be amazed by its sheer sandstone cliffs. Inspect the National Park Information Centre. Make your way on 4WD tracks to beautiful Palm Valley in Finke Gorge National Park.We will wonder through sands of the graceful, relict palm Livistona mariae which occurs nowhere else in the world.We journey onwards towards the George Gill Range and Watarrka National Park, featuring the spectacular Kings Canyon.With over 600 species of plant, Kings Canyon is botanically the richest region in all of arid Australia. 3 NIGHT – HERON ISLAND

Heron Island, classified a National Park and Marine Park, is a coral cay formed as part of the Great Barrier Reef some 8,500 years ago. Heron’s pristine waters support coral reefs of great beauty and diversity. More than 70% of all the Barrier Reef’s coral species can be found in the area. Heron Island is a diverse paradise and there are more than 30 dive sites around the island - you may prefer to snorkel or view the reef through the large picture windows of the semi-submersible boat.

DAY ONE - BRISBANE TO GLADSTONE
Arrive into Gladstone.
A complimentary coach departs Gladstone Airport to Gladstone Marina. Join the catamaran to Heron Island (takes approximately 120 minutes).

DAY TWO - HERON ISLAND (B)
Today is free you may wish to explore the island, dive, snorkel , relax by the pool or join a Semi-submersible coral viewing cruise the perfect way to get a glimpse of the reef without having to be a certified diver.
Board the boat and proceed down into the lower cabin and take a seat for the cruise, listen to the commentary, Enjoy viewing the abundance of Marine life and the array of colours that glide by the glass. You will feel close enough that your pictures will look like you were actually diving.

DAY THREE - HERON ISLAND (B)
Free time to explore the island, dive, snorkel or just relax by the pool.

DAY FOUR - HERON ISLAND TO GLADSTONE/SYDNEY (B)
Join the catamaran transfer from Heron Island to Gladstone Marina where the complimentary coach will transfer to the airport to connect with domestic flights.

Package includes return *catamaran transfers, superior class Heron Island accommodation for 3 nights including full buffet breakfast daily.

An Internal Airfare Supplement (over and above Tour Cost) is required for the flight to Gladstone and return. Depending on the flight arrival time in Gladstone, transfers to Heron Island are by launch (included in the tour cost) or by helicopter (see cost below).

Flying time is approximately 30 minutes. Maximum 15kg of luggage.
